In training, we’re trying to get a handle on Skye’s powers. Whenever she’s stressed or anxious, she manifests clone bodies. Alyse can easily scare one out with a horrifying transformation, and she’s so nervous about Katie spitting fire that I’ve had to make the little brat promise to stop jump-scaring her.

All the clones have their own personalities. The first dupe is a polished, poised version of Prime. Skye Three is pushier and more aggressive. Four and Five will pick fights with anyone, and Skye Six is almost entirely feral. She’s a hyperactive, foul-mouthed mess who’s obsessed with knives and stabbing. I think I like her best. Seven is like a sloppy drunk, Eight is a sad bb who just needs cuddles, and by the time you get to Nine she mostly stares at the wall. The trick for combat will be reaching the wild ones quickly.

“I wonder if you can get them to come out on your own.” I frown at her and she looks at her feet. “We can’t spare someone to be your own personal scarer. But it’s looking good, CeeCee. I think we can work with this.”

She smiles in relief, but the next second she screams. All eight of her duplicates stagger into being around her.

Something stings my neck, while Oni soars past over my shoulder.

“What was that?” I slap my hand up, and it comes away smeared with blood. Again.

“I am terribly sorry, Dylan,” Oni says.

Dani reaches me, tilting my head forward. “Another scratch.” She winces. “Maybe a little more. That was too close, Oni.” She takes me by the arm and leads me out of the room.

“Far too close.” The sword circles watchfully. “Dylan, I wish permission to engage her properly. I believe I could defeat her.”

“No, don’t kill her for fuck’s sake. She’s controlled, like we were.”

“You’re sure?” Dani asks.

“Not a hundred percent, but like…she’s chosen to focus on me hyper-specifically. The one person most protected. We’re having conversations. I think she’s finding a loophole in her father’s control.”

Dani hugs herself. “That’s a wild theory with zero evidence. Meanwhile, look at this cut on your neck. If Oni is a fraction of a second late…”

“Patch me up first, tell me off later?” I ask piteously.

Emma does the medical stuff, while Dani fidgets and asks me nearly a trillion times if I’m okay. It’s right near the wound I got from Fisher, so eventually I’m going to have this wicked badass scar around my neck that’ll look like I got choked out by Azula.

Dani climbs up on the stretcher and nestles into me. “We’re not done with this conversation. About you and your assassin admirer.”

“A victim of her father.” I poke at my dressing. “Maybe.”

“I understand you have this thing about saving every single mutant but this…”

I gaze at the ceiling, where the spreading colours of a stained-glass face hover. It’s greens drowning in blues, a pattern too complex to make out the details of.

Oni flashes up. Violet doesn’t react fast enough, and the tip of his blade punches a hole in the design on her face.
